The other day at the Family Center, a 9-year-old girl taps my arm and starts out "Um, Ms. Valarie, will you be...oh never mind!" and returns to her seat. I try to get her to tell me what she wanted, but she's acting all embarrassed.
Ten minutes later, she taps my arm again. "Ms. Valarie? Will you be my BFF?"
Obviously, I accepted! Kids are awesome.
It's hard to work with kids who often disappear just as I start to get to know them, so I'm going through the paperwork to be matched as a mentor with Franklin County Children's Services' "College Bound" program. I'll be helping a kid who is aging out of the foster care system to apply to college. It should be a fun experience!
