Security

It's past midnight, so let's call this the second day of my grateful project.

I am so thankful for my security. Obviously, the hotel chain on my apartment door isn't literally a very good security system, but it represents how I feel inside my home. Columbus is a pretty safe city, and I don't generally feel threatened when I'm out and about, but as a woman I always feel a bit in danger. Sometimes I get really feminista and rant about the injustice of worrying about rape and not being able to go out alone simply because I am female. But compared to most women in the world, I am living in a bubble. And when I lock the door at night, I feel confident that no one will hurt me. This is especially true because I am living with someone who is safe. From teaching kids, I know that not every person (and especially not every child) gets to relax at night and know that they are safe. I'm so glad that I have a mini fortress of solitude.
