I recently made a trip with Habitat for Humanity to Portugal, and on the way there I stopped for two days in Ireland, just because I could. Not everything went smoothly, so I'm compiling a list of travel tips so no one else will make the same mistakes that I did!
- book all flights ahead of time; standby is no longer a cheaper option, and the stress of day-before booking is not worth the chance you could save $100, especially since it could cost you several hundred more. This is a gamble not worth taking if you actually have to travel somewhere.
- on the other hand, DON'T book day trips in advance. Budget money to take bus tours or a train to the north of the country, but don't pay for it as part of a package online. It's likely cheaper to purchase day trips through your hotel or a local tourism agency, and you don't want to be locked into plan if you get sick overseas, or if a better opportunity presents itself.
- through traveling out of season is cheaper, be aware that many attractions may be closed
- if you are traveling alone (especially if you're female), don't skimp on accommodations! Book safe, private rooms.
- for anyone traveling alone: budget money for organized activities and attractions at your destination. Wandering the city is a cheap way to sightsee, but it's only fun when you have a friend to turn to and say, "Hey, do you want to go get lunch by the river? How about we go shopping in Temple Bar?" PLUS getting lost alone is very scary, while getting lost with a friend is usually just an adventure
